The Canaries are an autonomous region of Spain – but are situated much closer to Africa than Europe.  In proximity to the Tropic of Cancer.  And as a result bask in warm sunshine all year round.  With very little in the way of rainfall.

There are seven islands in total in the chain – the largest and best known of which is probably Tenerife.  Which is the administrative capital of the Western Canaries, comprising El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera.  Whilst Las Palmas is the capital of the Eastern group, made up of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

The islands are named after the latin for canus – or dog – rather than bearing any relation to our feathered friends.  And each has its own unique flavour and identity.  With Lanzarote one of the most popular as a holiday destination.

Lanzarote was in fact the first of the Canary Islands to be invaded and subdued by Spain during the early 15th century.  And has become a very popular holiday hot spot with visitors from the UK and Germany.  Who together make up about 1 million visitors a year.

Tourists arrive at Arrecife airport on flights to Lanzarote from across Europe though – as the island is also very popular with Dutch, Irish and Scandinavian tourists too.

Package holidays in Lanzarote were first marketed in the early 1970´s and tourism on the island took off in and around two main resorts; Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen.  Which have since been joined by a third destination, Playa Blanca.  Which is home to the largest selection of Lanzarote hotels and holiday villas on the island.

Playa Blanca really was just a sleepy little fishing village at the southern end of the island until a decade or so ago.  But that has all changed now as the resort is now the fastest growing area on Lanzarote.  Thanks to the fact that many visitors now favour breaks in hotels and villas in Playa Blanca as the weather here is much better than elsewhere on the island.  Particularly during the winter moths.

Even in December holidaymakers can expect to enjoy days on the beach here – with the mercury rising well into the 20´s.  Making this an ideal destination for anyone seeking a good value winter break.  Whilst Lanzarote is also a perfect choice for a summer holiday too.

Our quest to seek out America’s most bizarre attractions continues as we venture East from California to Texas. Shovel in hand; we’ve dug deep to unearth these five fabulously bizarre Lone Star State attractions:

1. Beer Can House: Houston, Texas

To build a home made of 39,000 beer cans is impressive. To drink a 6 pack every day for 18 years to get those 39,000 beer cans is superhuman. But that’s exactly what late owner John Milkovisch did, drinking down some 14,000 litres of beer to build this; his aluminium dream home.

With all that alcohol in his system, you’d think the construction would be shoddy, but look closely and you’ll see that each can is placed with perfect artisan-like precision. Not one can or metal tab out of place.

Spike TV was so impressed with Jon’s work in fact; they named him “Man Of The Week” back in 2004. We doubt they could say the same about his liver.

2. Missile Base Bachelor Pad: Oplin, Texas

The Berlin wall may have long fallen, but you can still experience Cold War chic living at its best. Descend 180 feet down the winding staircases of the former Atlas missile silo and you’ll land in the subterranean home of former home renovator, Bruce Townsley (remember, you can’t knock on a missile silo; so let him know you’re coming in advance).

3. Cathedral of Junk: Austin, Texas

The old adage, one’s man junk is another man’s treasure could not be truer here. Over 20+ years, Vince Hanneman, has brought together over 60 tons of junk to create an architectural masterpiece worthy of even Frank Lloyd Wright.
